Atropine Drops
Clayton M. Anderson OD uses atropine drops to dilate the eyes during an exam. Dilation is necessary to ensure that Dr. Anderson can see the entire structure of the eyes to determine whether you have an eye disease or need vision correction. Atropine drops are available by prescription only.
The Purpose of Eye Dilation during an Exam
Patients often come in with vague complaints of eye pain, not knowing the origin of the pain. They may also suspect that they already have an eye disease, such as cataracts, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, or glaucoma. When exposed to light, the normal reaction of the eyes is for the pupils to get smaller. Atropine drops force the pupils to stay open and allow Dr. Anderson to view each eye’s optic nerve, retina, and macula.
The listed conditions typically do not cause significant pain or other symptoms in the early to middle stages. A dilated eye exam allows for obtaining a prompt and accurate diagnosis so that you can begin treatment for your eye condition as soon as possible.
How Long Do the Effects of Atropine Drops Last?
After Dr. Anderson puts atropine drops in your eyes, it takes an average of 15 to 30 minutes for them to become fully dilated. The drops may sting slightly when first applied, but this sensation disappears quickly. The effects wear off entirely within four to six hours for most people.
We will provide you with a special pair of cardboard glasses to wear over your eyes when you leave. While you do not have to wear them, we strongly recommend that you do if you drive yourself home.
Other Uses for Atropine Drops
While dilating the eyes during an exam is the most common use for atropine drops Dr. Anderson may also prescribe them to you or your child to treat certain eye conditions. The most common non-clinical use of these eye drops is the treatment of lazy eye and eye swelling. Be sure to read the instructions on the bottle carefully and follow the recommended dosing schedule.
Need to Schedule an Eye Exam?
Adults with healthy vision should have an eye exam every one to two years. Children, older adults, and those with diagnosed eye conditions need more frequent appointments. Dr. Anderson will review the appointment recommendation when you come to our Pleasant PA or Charleroi PA eye clinic for an exam.
